What to Wear to Your First Pole Dance Class

For your first pole dance class, start with fitted shorts, a top that gives you the support you need and a warm layer to take off. Follow your studio’s advice about bare feet, socks and any other equipment. You do not need a whole new wardrobe before you have tried a class.

Shorts that leave room for skin contact

Many pole moves use friction between your skin and the pole. Choose shorts that allow the upper inner thighs to touch the pole without fabric bunching in the way. They do not have to be the most revealing pair in the room.

If you would like a mid-rise cut with moderate back coverage, Mandy shorts are one option. Emma shorts have a high waist and side drawstrings for adjusting the leg length. Our pole shorts guide explains how rise and back coverage differ.

Bring leggings or joggers over your shorts for warming up if that feels more comfortable. Your instructor can tell you when you need to uncover a contact point.

A top that fits when you move

A sports bra or fitted tank can work well. A crop top may need a sports bra underneath; coverage alone does not tell you how much support a top offers. Raise your arms, bend and turn to check that the outfit stays comfortable and covers what you want it to.

The Nicole sports bra offers medium support and a double-layered front. The Christine tank top includes a built-in sports bra if you prefer a longer top. Choose according to your own support needs, and use the size charts for each piece.

Do you need heels or kneepads?

For a standard beginner technique class, heels are usually unnecessary. They belong to specific class styles, and your studio will say when to bring them. Ask whether you should train barefoot or in socks.

Kneepads can be useful for floorwork. Before buying them, check whether the first lesson includes that kind of movement and whether the studio has particular recommendations.

What to leave off

Remove jewellery that could catch or scratch the pole. Avoid exposed zips, buckles and hard decorations at contact points. Follow the studio’s guidance about lotion, oils and hand cream: residue on the skin or pole can affect grip.

Your first-class packing list

  • Fitted shorts and a top with suitable support.
  • A warm layer for before and after training.
  • Socks or other items requested by the studio.
  • Water and a small towel.

If you already have suitable clothing, try it first. Once you know which cuts you enjoy, explore pole dance shorts and sports bras to build an outfit you will want to wear again.
